Sparling Family Memorial Restoration Project

A Documented Family Plot Restoration at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Schuylerville, New York

The Sparling Family Plot Restoration Project is a documented cemetery care project completed by Gravestone Revival at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Schuylerville, New York. This project began with an out-of-state family member seeking help locating, photographing, and assessing a family plot from Arkansas.

What began as a request for current cemetery photographs and cleaning guidance became a complete family memorial documentation and preservation project involving nine memorials, detailed photo documentation, gravestone cleaning, leveling, resetting, alignment correction, and ongoing progress updates for the family.

Before & After Photo Documentation and a Written Gravesite Condition Report are always provided for cemetery care projects.

The Family’s Challenge

The Sparling family contacted Gravestone Revival from Arkansas after genealogy research led them to relatives buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Schuylerville, New York.

The family did not have a cemetery section number, plot number, or detailed cemetery map. They did have an older photograph showing the family plot and surrounding background. Gravestone Revival used the visible background landmarks, cemetery terrain, and nearby houses shown in that photograph to orient within the cemetery and locate the Sparling family plot.

This is exactly the type of situation where local cemetery documentation can help an out-of-town family understand what is actually present at the cemetery today.

Initial Documentation Visit

After locating the family plot, Gravestone Revival photographed and documented the memorials so the family could review the current condition from Arkansas.

The initial documentation showed one large Sparling family memorial and eight accompanying individual memorials arranged in two rows. Six stones were located in one row, with two stones behind the main family memorial. All nine memorials were photographed and assessed.

The assessment identified several visible preservation concerns, including biological growth, lichen, moss, environmental staining, reduced inscription readability, uneven settlement, sunken stones, and misalignment throughout the family plot.

Conditions Observed

Surface Conditions

  • Moderate to heavy lichen growth
  • Moss accumulation
  • Environmental staining
  • Reduced readability
  • Dirty and weathered stone surfaces

Structural & Presentation Conditions

  • Eight smaller memorials sunken into the ground
  • Several stones tilted at varying angles
  • Rows no longer properly aligned
  • Memorials not level horizontally or vertically
  • Family plot presentation affected by long-term settlement

Recommendations Provided to the Family

The family initially requested pricing for cleaning. After the documentation visit, Gravestone Revival provided photographs, condition observations, and multiple service options.

The first option addressed cleaning only. The second option included cleaning all nine memorials plus leveling, resetting, and aligning the eight accompanying stones. After reviewing the photographs and recommendations, the family approved the complete preservation package.

This project demonstrates why documentation matters. The photographs made it clear that cleaning alone would improve readability and appearance, but would not address settlement, alignment, and presentation concerns affecting the family plot.

Leveling, Resetting & Alignment Work

The first phase of the approved restoration focused on leveling and resetting the eight smaller memorials. Each memorial was carefully excavated, reset, leveled, and aligned to restore a more orderly and respectful family plot presentation.

The large Sparling family memorial served as the guide point for aligning the two rows of accompanying stones. Crusher run and stone dust were added beneath the stones to create a stable foundation and help reduce future uneven settling.

Reset Complete Before Cleaning

After the leveling and reset work was completed, the rows were brought back into a cleaner visual line. This structural work was completed before the final cleaning phase so the stones could be cleaned after being properly positioned.

This sequence matters. Leveling and resetting first allowed the final cleaning work to be performed on stones that were already properly placed, aligned, and presented within the family plot.

Cleaning All Nine Memorials

After the leveling and reset work was complete, all nine memorials were cleaned using preservation-focused methods. The goal was to improve readability, remove biological growth, reduce staining, and restore a more respectful family plot appearance without pressure washing.

The cleaning phase addressed lichen, moss, surface buildup, and environmental staining that had made several inscriptions difficult to read.

  • Nine memorials cleaned
  • Biological growth reduced
  • Moss and lichen addressed
  • Readability improved
  • Final presentation documented with photographs

Documentation for an Out-of-State Family

Because the family was located in Arkansas, communication and documentation were central to the project. Photographs were sent during the initial documentation visit, during the leveling and reset work, during the cleaning phase, and after the final presentation was complete.

This allowed the family to follow the project from out of state and understand the condition, recommendations, work progress, and final results without needing to be physically present at the cemetery.

For families who cannot visit regularly, this type of documented cemetery care provides confidence, visibility, and peace of mind.
